insurance coverage

Does insurance cover our services?

  • Not directly, but patients can often get some payment from their insurance company for our services (read below).
  • There is no law requiring insurance companies to cover naturopathic care in the State of Arizona.
  • Most insurance companies in Arizona do not voluntarily cover naturopathic care.

How can you use your insurance plan at our office?

  • As a courtesy to our patients we submit a universal health insurance claim form (HCFA) to your insurance company for each visit.
  • You must still pay at the time of your visit.
  • The claim we submit asks the insurance company to reimburse you for the visit.

What can you expect to get back from the insurance company?

  • Most plans have an out-of-network deductible.
  • After meeting the out-of-network deductible, many patients will get a check from their insurance company reimbursing them for a percentage of their visit.
  • The percentage depends on your plan's coverage for out-of-network providers.

What type of insurance do you need to be able to submit claims?

  • You must have a Preferred Provider Organization plan, or PPO.
  • Look on your card, front and back, for the letters "PPO."
  • If you see the letters "HMO," then we cannot submit a claim for you.
  • If you don't see either PPO or HMO, call your insurance company and ask.
  • It is always a good idea to call your company and ask about your benefits.
  • It is a bad idea to assume your insurance will cover anything (at any doctor's office).

Will your insurance cover labs or other tests we order?

  • If you have a HMO plan, your insurance will not cover tests we order.
  • If you have a PPO plan, it is very likely your insurance will cover tests we order, but insurance coverage is never a guarantee (which is also true of MD services).
  • No one can guarantee you insurance coverage for any medical services, but we will always do our best to help you.

What can you do to change things so that your insurance will cover naturopathic care?

  • Call your insurance company and tell them you want naturopathic care covered.
  • If your insurance is through your employer, talk to your Human Resources department and tell them you want coverage for naturopathic care.
  • Call you state legislators and tell them you want insurance coverage for naturopathic doctors in your state.
  • Let the Obama administration know you want naturopathic care covered in any new national health plan.
